Introduction
The European Commission (hereafter “the Commission”) is committed to protect your personal data and to respect your privacy. The Commission collects and further processes personal data pursuant to Regulation (EU) 2018/1725 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 October 2018.
This privacy statement explains the reason for the processing of your personal data, the way we collect, handle and ensure protection of all personal data provided, how that information is used and what rights you have. It also specifies the contact details of the responsible Data Controller, the Data Protection Officer and the European Data Protection Supervisor.

Why and how do we process your personal data?
Purpose of the processing operation: The European Commission’s Directorates-General, including the Directorate-General for Communication, offer a large number of websites located on infrastructure maintained by the Directorate-General for Informatics. The technical setup collects and uses your personal information to provide the European Commission websites within the europa.eu domain, hosted on Commission infrastructure.
When you access a European Commission website, the Commission receives the Internet Protocol address (IP address) or the device ID of the device used.
When browsing, small data files called cookies may be placed on your device. Their purpose is to enable the site to store visitor preferences, make the websites operational and gather analytics data. This information is anonymous. Learn more about the Cookies policy.
Your personal data will not be used for automated decision-making or profiling.
On what legal ground(s) do we process your personal data?
We process your personal data because the processing is necessary for the performance of a task carried out in the public interest or in the exercise of official authority vested in the Union institution or body (Article 5(1)(a) of Regulation 2018/1725).
The processing operation is supported by the following EU law:
- Article 11(1) and (2) of the Treaty on the European Union
- Article 15(1) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union
- Article 58(2) of the Financial Regulation (2018/1046)

Which personal data do we collect and further process?
The Directorate-General for Informatics collects the following categories of personal data:
- Internet Protocol address (IP address) or the device ID (e.g. IMEI number and Wi-Fi MAC address) used to access the website.
Without this processing you will not be able to establish a technical connection to Commission infrastructure and therefore will not be able to access the websites.
How long do we keep your personal data?
The European Commission only keeps your IP address or device ID for the duration of the browsing session, after which it is deleted immediately.
In addition, IP addresses may be saved for one year in log files of the Directorate-General for Informatics operational environment for security purposes (ref. DPR-EC-02886 DIGIT IT security operations and services).
How do we protect and safeguard your personal data?
All personal data in electronic format are stored on servers of the European Commission or its contractors. All processing operations are carried out pursuant to the Commission Decision (EU, Euratom) 2017/46 of 10 January 2017.
The Commission’s contractors are bound by contractual clauses and confidentiality obligations.
To protect your personal data, the Commission has put in place technical and organisational measures. Technical measures address online security, data loss, alteration or unauthorised access. Organisational measures restrict access solely to authorised persons with a legitimate need to know.
Who has access to your personal data and to whom is it disclosed?
Access is provided to Commission staff responsible for this processing operation and to authorised staff according to the “need to know” principle. Such staff abide by confidentiality agreements.
Access may also be provided to external contractors working on behalf of the Commission, under contractual agreement, for creation, maintenance, management and archiving of websites.
The information will not be given to any third party, except where required by law.
What are your rights and how can you exercise them?
You have rights as a “data subject” under Chapter III (Articles 14–25) of Regulation (EU) 2018/1725: the right to access, rectify or erase your personal data, restrict processing and, where applicable, the right to data portability.
You also have the right to object to processing carried out pursuant to Article 5(1)(a).
